Last Shot At Photography

This semester has wrapped up a lot faster than I pictured it would have. I can’t even explain in words how much I have enjoyed learning about different types of photography throughout my learning project. I have come to enjoy taking pictures so much more than I used to. I have learned that pictures can mean so much more than we might see them as well.  I decided that with my learning from the semester I wanted to take portrait and action shot photos of people in my life I am thankful for.

Throughout my photography learning journey I learned lots on how to properly take certain kinds of photos. Here is what I found about each and tips on how to get the best shots!

January 22nd: Micro Photography: Best for getting great detail from an object. You are able to get the best photo when the canon is left on the close-up setting. The objects will stand out a lot more if you take the photo with a solid background. The bigger the lens you have the better, but it is not mandatory! I took my pictures with an 18-55mm lens and it did the trick!

January 29th: Black & White: This type of photo is open ended to which setting to use. These photos are exactly what they are said to be with the photo edited to be black and white. These photos can be edited with your I phone or any other editing app! They are one of my favorites because I feel sometimes just having no co lour gives the photo more character!

February 5th: Action Photos: I found these photos a lot harder than I would have ever thought! It helps to keep your camera in sports mode. Make sure to have the camera set to continuous shooting mode so it is able to take a lot of photos to catch the object or person in action. This type of photography is great for getting photos of playing sports or doing anything that contains fast motion movements.

February 12th: Landscape: Best shots were taken when the camera is left in landscape mode. Using a tripod for these photos also helps a lot. If you are able to take these photos during a golden hour, sunset or sunrise they will come out to look beautiful! Sask skies are amazing to capture with the camera! I was able to use the beauty of my own yard to capture most of these photos. You notice with your pictures that things that are so simple can turn out to be the most beautiful pictures. Animal Photography: These photos work best when the camera is in the sports mode if the animal you are taking shots of doesn’t sit still! If your animal is calm the camera is good to stay in its regular AV mode and can make the photo stand out by zooming in

February 26th: Food Photography: These types of photos are made to make your mouth water. These photos turned out best when the camera is left in AV mode. This mode adjusts your shutter speed to give the object it’s taking a picture of the right amount of light. I learned that to get the perfect shots of your food you have to try different angles and the zoom feature is your best friend This type of photography was probably my least favorite because every time I go back and look at it I get hungry.

March 4th: Reflection Photos: I found that these photos were the hardest out of all the different types to take. These photos are all about the angle. I found that editing these types of photos made a huge difference in how clear you could see the reflection. I used the editing options on my iPhone XR and turned the brightness down and turned up the contrast on the photo. These photos would turn out awesome in the summer when you are able to get the reflection off the lake with the sunset!

March 11th: Timer Cam: These work best with a tripod! They are great for getting group photos so no one gets left out. Best left on the AV mode on the canon rebel xsi. I loved how I was able to get into these photos as well. My camera gave me 10 seconds before taking the photos which helped everyone somewhat get ready! Using the timer it seems like you are able to capture funny and realistic photos of how picture taking usually goes! The best part is looking through all the photos afterward!

April 1st: Candid/ Portrait: This type of photography has become one of my favorites to capture! Portrait photos are great for when you’re just trying to focus the shot on one person. Using the portrait mode on the camera will take the best shots. Having good light exposure, solid backgrounds and being able to blur out backgrounds will make these types of photos stand out. Being able to alter the angles you take the photos from will make the photo a lot more fun.

I know that I am nowhere near being a professional at taking photos but the amount of knowledge that I took from this learning project will now be with me forever. I am more than proud of the photos I was able to capture over this semester! I have learned that :

  1. Your only going to get better with practice
  2. You are able to achieve anything if you put your heart and mind to it
  3. Cameras have a lot of different settings to play around with to capture different types of shots
  4. Playing around with different angles and props really help with getting awesome and unique photos
  5. Not every shot is going to turn out how you want but patience is key

For my final learning project, I wanted to come up with something that would mean something to me and show my friends why I am so thankful for them. With the photography skills I have learned over my journey I was able to take shots of my friends that show and capture who they are as a person. You can see why my life is full of smiles because of these beautiful people.

This is my happiness. These are the people that have been by my side through everything. The ups, the downs and everything in between. They are the people that shaped me to be the human that I am today. They made me believe in myself and push myself to be the best that I could be. Without them, my life would honestly be nothing.

He is so encouraging and pushes me to do whatever I put my mind to. I am so happy to have found a man like Mason.

Shaelyn- Shaelyn is my sister and my better half. Shaelyn is the most considerate and most patient person you will meet. She has her own way of thinking but is reliable for everything. She is quieter out of us two but once she warms up to people she’s just as outgoing. Shaelyn is always there for a shoulder to cry and for support. She will always be my best friend and I have no clue where I would be if my parents didn’t bless me with a sister like her.

Brooke – Brooke is definitely one of a kind. Brooke is always very upbeat and very talkative. She is able to make friends with anyone and is the type of person that can make someone laugh over anything. She is a person that is full of energy and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind. Brooke is my adventure partner because she also has the travel bug inside her. I love the person that Brooke is and the bright personality that she has. I will never get tired of having a friend like Brooke around.

Kaylee- Kaylee is an all-around amazing person. Even though I have only known Kaylee since I was in grade 10 we have been close ever since we met. Kaylee has the biggest heart and always puts others before herself.  You can always find Kaylee with a smile on her face and spreading positivity to those around her.Kaylee is naturally beautiful and has a sparkle in her eye. I am so glad I was blessed to have met a human as kind and compassionate as Kaylee.

Breanne/Kaitlin- Breanne and Kaitlin have been my adopted sisters ever since elementary school. We grew up doing everything together and being inseparable. Kaitlin has a very wild and energetic personality. Breanne has a very laid back personality and is very considerate to everyone around her.  Both these girls’ smiles light up a room. They are two beautiful humans that I have always looked up too. Both of them have always been for me no matter what was going on. So glad to have grown up with these two by my side.

Brooklyn – Brooklyn is a person with such a beautiful soul. She is honestly someone that is always full of good vibes and can always turn a bad day better. She is someone you can always see smiling and making others around her feel the same way. I love how Brooklyn is always so positive and puts everyone before herself. I am so thankful to have a best friend like Brooklyn in my life

She looks at the positives for everything and can make any day better. Lexy has a heart full of gold with such a bubbly personality. I am so thankful to be blessed with such a kind-hearted human in my life.

Brandi- Brandi is one of my friends that has such a kind soul. She has always been one to cheer me up when I’ve been down and is always ready to do exciting things. Every time we are together the time is spent full of laughter and new adventures. Brandi is a beautiful human that has cheered me when I am struggling with something in my life. She will do anything she can to see her friends happy. I am blessed to have Brandi in my life.

Emma- Emma is one of my friends that is so considerate of everyone and everything. She is always worrying about other people and is known as the mom of our friend group. She has a heart of gold and always pushes herself and others to do their best. Emma is someone who puts life into perspective and just makes the best of whatever life throws at her. Everything about Emma is amazing. I am so lucky to have such a determined, beautiful, and energetic friend in my life.

Kristiaan: Kristiaan is the most determined girl I know. She strives to do her best in everything she does. Kristiaans laugh is so contagious and can make any bad day better. She has such a friendly personality that makes her able to get along with everyone. Her positive outlook on life is something I strive to do in my life as well. This beautiful soul is the perfect role model for anyone. I am so lucky to have met a girl like Kristiaan

My Entire Family- Both sides of my family are huge so I didn’t have time to capture pictures of everyone. Since I was little they have all had huge impacts on my life. They supported me through every decision I’ve made and were always there when I needed that extra support. I will continue to thank God for the wonderful family he blessed me with.

My Grandma- My Grandma Helen definitely has a way with words however with being 85 she no longer has a filter! My grandma is always full of new stories and advice for all of her grandchildren. Grandma has a huge heart and would do anything to see her family happy. She has such a bright personality and is a person that is very easy to talk to. With her being my only grandparent left, I am thankful for the time I still get to spend with her.

My parents – I will forever be grateful for the parents I have been given. They have raised me to be the woman I am today. They have always been there to support me through all my goals, push me through my struggles and have always been my rock. They have taught me to love and how to just enjoy the life I have been given. My mom’s big heart has taught me to never take anything for granted and as she says to do everything you dream of. My dad’s determined personality has taught me to work hard for what I want and to never give up on anything. If you give me anything time it’ll come. Their trust and the unconditional love they give me will always be something that I envy.

There is no way that I would ever be able to put everyone that has made a difference in my life in this end project! I have had so many amazing people bless my life over the 20 years I have walked this earth.

I know that no life is ever going to be perfect, but it’s only going to be as perfect as you make it. I live up to that.

I LOVE THIS LIFE I LIVE

OH NO! I DON’T WANT THAT THERE 🚫

This week I decided to focus more on learning how to edit my photos! Have you ever had some object or item wreck your entire photo? I never thought anything was able to remove it and the picture was just wrecked because of the photo bomber! Technology saved the day on this one!

I was watching videos on tik tok one day and came across this video! It showed what app to use to erase any unwanted objects in your photos. Not only did it give the name of the app which was Retouch but in 60 seconds it also explained how to use it! CRAZY RIGHT? I love tik tok for the reason you never know what you are going to come across! Whenever I have extra time on my hands I love going on tik tok to see what I can find! I got my wisdom teeth out last Thursday so I’ve had quite a bit of time to browse lol!

The app that was recommended on tik tok costed money so instead, I tried an app called removal lite! This app was free which is so much better for a college student’s bank account lol! I found that it worked very similar to the one shown on tik tok! It didn’t have as many options, but it did have everything I needed to erase the unwanted things out of my pictures!

I think this app will come in handy and can also be very useful to use in the classroom as well. This will be good for when there are pictures being taken in the classroom and maybe a kid that doesn’t have permission to have his face on the internet gets in on the background of the picture. This app will allow you to erase them out of the picture completely!

Instead of taking new pictures this week, I decided to scroll back to some of my older photos to erase the unwanted objects out of them! Here are some before and after pictures of how well the app worked! As you can see the app doesn’t do a 100% job but it still erases the objects that you don’t want to be there. I think the Retouch app would be a little bit better but as the saying goes “you get what you pay for”

Big Birthday Wishes 🎈

What’s better than being able to capture shots during a fun event? Nothing that I can think of, hahaha! I had so much fun being able to capture different parts of this birthday party! I really felt that I was able to capture the mood with the photos that I took.

The smiles, the laughs, and the constant bonding were the main things I was trying to capture throughout the night. People talking and catching up on their lives and overall just having a good time. My main goal was to get a picture with everyone in the photo including myself so I attempted in using the self-timer on the camera while using my tripod. I didn’t get everyone in because the boys didn’t want to cooperate so I got one of the majority of the girls and I. This was my first time using the timer option on the camera and was amazed by how well it turned out. I watched a video on youtube on how to set my camera to the correct timer settings. My camera allowed me to choose to have a 3-second or 10-second countdown which was very helpful. We are a very dysfunctional group and we definitely needed that 10 seconds to be ready for the picture. (I think we didn’t end up getting the picture-perfect photo but we got one that outlines the personalities we all have haha!) I learned that by clicking the timer button the camera you are able to scroll over and decide how many pictures you want the camera to take as well. This acted just like a burst option on the I-phone.

Throughout the night I was able to use different styles of photography including portrait shots, action shots, candids, timer cam, and group photos. This way I was really able to capture people’s emotions throughout the night as well as pictures with me in them. I felt like I at least needed to get into some group photos lol.

Here’s a quick 1 minute tutorial on how to use the self timer on the Canon Rebel XSI

Overall it was such a great night and now we have multiple photos everyone will be able to reflect back on. It was my sister’s 22nd birthday so now she will have these pictures forever and to have as a keepsake. I 100% think that taking pictures is the best thing people can do: They make such good memories and they will always be there for you to look back on 20- 50 years from now! Pictures are gifts in themselves❤️

How many things do you see 🤯

This week I have decided to focus on reflection photography, also known as mirror photography. I knew from the start this was going to be the most difficult and most challenging type of photography I was going to take. But … I was willing to put myself up for the challenge! I thought I would try using my iPhone XR this week because of how many photos I was having to take.

I had trouble thinking of ways that these pictures could actually work and turn out looking good. I googled, searched Pinterest and asked one of my friends that is a photographer to help me out and send me in the right direction. Usually, I find that Pinterest has the best ideas for absolutely anything but I can say google definitely stole the show in this type of photography. I noticed that it is a type of photography that isn’t as popular as others.

I can admit that I am really not a creative person but taking on photography for my learning project has really opened my mind to thinking outside the box. I was intrigued to take photos using a mirror, water, and to attempt with frozen ice. Mother nature has been playing some games with our weather this past week so all the ice that I had around me now turned to puddles of water!

I did some research on reflection photography before starting to take my photos. I got myself to think that this type of photography was intimidating and would be almost impossible to accomplish. After reading through some websites I learned that these types of photos are very similar to landscape photos. That blew my mind. 4 main tips that I found that would be helpful for this type of photography is:

  1. Reduce shutter speed(to take multiple photos)
  2. Use a tripod
  3. Having a wide-angle lens (not mandatory but helps)
  4. Using props to make your photos more detailed

I feel that these pictures didn’t turn out as good as I would have liked them too but I believe if I continue to practice them they will get better. If anyone has any other tips that they think would be good for capturing this type of photography I would love to know! So happy to have you following along with my learning journey! Also if anyone has any suggestions of what type of photography I could try next that would be much appreciated 🙂 Stay tuned for more photos!

Bon Appetit🥗🥓

This week I decided to take on food photography. I really enjoyed taking photos of my food but I am incredibly sorry to anyone who gets hungry looking at these photos. I will link the recipes to all the meals I have made since they were all to die for!

This week I also decided I was going to edit the photos that I took. I used the basic editor on my iPhone which I found did the job well. I adjusted the brightness, highlights, and shadows so I was able to make the food stand out in the photos and be more vibrant. I also adjusted the contrast in the photos to adjust the tones that were available in the photos. I took multiple pictures of the food I made just so I could get the best angle. I swear my family thought I was crazy from how interested I was with the food I cooked lol. I kept my camera in the original AV mode which adjusts the lighting in the photos before taking the photo. I used my best friend google to find out which mode was the best for this type of photography. I followed along with COOKIE and Kate to find out some of the best tips to take food photography.

The first meal I made was a chicken bacon ranch chicken breast. I would have to say it was my favorite out of everything I have made. The chicken was so moist and had so much flavor. I added tomatoes on top after to just for some extra flavor. With the chicken, I roasted some asparagus in the oven. I drizzled olive oil over them with minced garlic and herb and garlic seasoning. I let them cook in the oven for 10 minutes then added cheese to be melted onto them. The cheese added so much flavor and made them taste incredible!! For dessert, I bought a chocolate caramel pecan cheesecake from the M&M meat shop. 10/10 would recommend for anyone that has a sweet tooth.

The next meal I made is for all the seafood and salad lovers out there. I made garlic shrimp with a mixed green salad and stuffed mushrooms. The shrimp were sauteed in butter and garlic spread seasoning. I allowed them to sit and simmer on the stove for a good 5-10 minutes so all the flavor could absorb into the shrimp. The green salad had a variety of romaine lettuce, kale, spinach and some red cabbage in it topped with creamy poppy seed dressing. The stuffed mushrooms I just created myself with whipping together cheddar cheese, celery, peppers, and onions. It will make your lips water it is so appetizing and filling!

Hope I didn’t make you to hungry with these photos! Thanks for following along with my photography journey, stay tuned for more photos 🙂

Let’s Examine The Skies🌥📷

This week I had a difficult time deciding what I was going to photograph. I decided to take a look at Google and see what other options I had to choose from. Landscape and animal photography really caught my eye as I was going through the different types of photography.

I was determined to get photos of the great amounts of wildlife behind my acreage but those animals are scared of me for some reason(or I’m scared of them, not sure haha). So sad to say every time I tried getting close enough to get a photo of them they ran and the picture became nothing but a blur. I find Saskatchewan’s variety of wildlife beautiful. So instead of wildlife, I decided to take more photos of my dog (I am OBSESSED with him), and my boyfriend’s dog. Both of our animals are very energetic which makes it difficult to take a good picture of them sitting still. For these pictures, I kept my camera in portrait mode so it would focus on the dog’s faces. I will admit that more than a couple of treats were needed for them to cooperate.

One reason I love living in Sask is being able to see the gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. Sask is known for the sunsets and sunrises which is why it has gotten the name “land of the living skies”. I honestly can say I will never get sick of seeing the skies. I decided to take a drive around my acreage and see what type of landscape photos I was able to capture. My favorite pictures were the abandoned barn in the middle of a field and the railway car beside the abanded house. I felt that these photos had the most character to them. I found different websites on how to take great landscape photos. I also watched a video on youtube on how to properly put my camera into the right setting. I really enjoyed taking these pictures and there wasn’t much to learn besides putting the camera into landscape mode and keeping the flash off. Very straightforward for this type of photography.

I took quite a few pictures this week so I decided to use an app called slideshow on my phone. I had to import all the pictures from my camera to my phone so I could make a video with them. This app is free for the first seven days but after you have to pay $3.99/ per week. I decided to give it a try since it seemed to have some pretty cool features to it! Using the first media icon on the left  I was able to upload all the photos I took and was able to rearrange them in any order I liked. They give you different options on what “mood” you want to put your pictures in which is just like changing the filter on the photos. I choose to not change the mood since the colors in my photos were very beautiful by themselves. This app also allows you to add in music by clicking the music note icon and also allows you to change how long the photos will be shown using the timer icon. I decided to set mine to 1.5 seconds so it didn’t seem like the video was dragging. I loved how this app gave a good variety of things to do when it came to making a slideshow. When you are completed you are able to share it to almost any social media site using the share icon on the right. This app is very easy and straight forward to use for beginners like me. I really enjoyed using this app for making a slideshow of my pictures and will definitely be using it for other projects in the future!

Check out my video I made with the SLIDESHOW app!

Get that timer ready ⏱

This week I thought I would try to do something a little bit harder to accomplish. My mind was set on action shots for this week’s learning post. The trickiest part of these photos is having the perfect timing otherwise these pictures don’t turn out the way they were supposed to! I used my I Phone XR for these photos since it has a burst option. This mode allows me to take multiple photos all at once almost as if it was a live photo.

I had no idea where to even start when it came to action shots so I started my search on Pinterest (honestly my favorite place to find everything I need ). I found some awesome blogs to follow that clearly outlined what to do to take that perfect action shot! The one blog gave a step by step progress and even gave recommendations to which lens would work for this type of shot! I am so thankful for this girl’s blog because it allowed me to get some pretty cool shots.

My favorite photo to attempt was the boiling water and cold temperatures outside. I have seen this done a few times and it had me amazed. The water freezes into droplets right when it’s thrown in the air and calls for a really cool photo! It took a few attempts to get the perfect shot/angle but I think I nailed it. I was a bit cautious about having the water not freeze and drop back down on my sister. Thank goodness that didn’t happen because that would have been a nightmare!

The second action shot photo I decided to take was with glitter. It ended in a huge mess but turned out exactly how I wanted it to! I wish I would have got a picture of my dog after this project was over. Gosh was it funny!

I can say that I am really enjoying doing photography for my learning project. It has allowed me to test my creativity and explore new things that photography has to offer! If anyone has any other advice or ideas of what I could try, that would be appreciated! Thanks a bunch for following along in my journey 🙂

Thanks so much for following along!

Not The Basic B&W

This week I decided to focus on black and white photography. I don’t know why but there is something I just love about these types of photos. Even though there is no colour to the photo I feel that it puts a lot of character into the photo.

I have always been interested in trying to shoot some photos that have black and white backgrounds with only one object having colour. An example would be someone shooting a basketball and only have the basketball in the colour. It adds an extra touch to the photo but takes some extra time to figure out how to edit the colour in! I watched a video on YouTube how to properly do it and which app to use! I found that the app Photo Splash worked the best because I was able to adjust the size of the brush when I was editing the photos.

With the extra time that these photos took me to edit I am beyond proud of how they turned out. The more I use the editing apps the more I feel comfortable with using them for the photos I take! I felt it took some getting used to and it got frustrating trying not to edit anything else in colour ! The app is so touchy and was difficult when I was trying to edit colour into small objects! I for one have small hands and fingers and that still didn’t seem to help me ! Next time I do this I plan to buy a stylus pen to be more precise with the lines!

Not sure if people enjoy these types of photos as much as I do but I would love to hear your feedback on them! Anything else you would suggest trying?

Let’s Take A Closer Look📸

This week I decided to focus my learning on close up and focus shots. This is also known as macro photography! These shots are made for the photographer to get pictures up close to show precise detail.

I found it a bit easier to take close up shots with my phone using portrait mode.Portrait mode is on is on Apple 7 plus and newer phones. This option allows the camera to focus on just one object and blur out the background making the object extremely clear. I had to watch a video on YouTube on how to change my camera to be able to take clear close shots. I found this a bit confusing changing and fooling around with all the settings on my camera. One tip that I found to help a lot was making sure the flash was on and staying as sturdy as I could while taking the photo. Personally I found that my iPhone and camera are pretty equal to how clear they take pictures. What do you think?

I decided not to worry about editing these first set of photos because I wanted to show how much detail is shown in the original photos.

Here are some different shots I got from both my camera and iPhone! I can’t believe how much technology has changed over the years and how great the cameras on our phones have gotten. Pretty crazy I think ! Everything we need is right at our fingertips.

Is there any other tips or advice  you could give me for trying something else with macro photography ?

Picture This

Photography has always been an interest to me but I never had the time to dig deeper into the learning of how to properly use a camera or the editing of the photos. I bought a canon rebel xsi over 3 years ago thinking that I would get into taking pictures but it never happened. I am thrilled to finally take it out of its box and put it to good use for this project.

Over the course of this learning project I hope to learn a lot more about what my camera and iphone xr are able to do with photography. I want to be able to explore the different settings on the camera and discover the difference of what it does for a photo.

Throughout this project I also hope to dig into some different photo editing apps on my phone for the photos I take with my camera and iPhone. I want to play around more with light exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, sharpness and definition. I will be posting the before and after of the photos to show how much a photo can change with a few small adjustments.

Different types of photographs I plan on exploring more are:

Portraits : Pictures of a person or groups of people

Nature – pictures of the outdoors and things in nature

Landscape – mode when taking photos of a scene not a single object

Food – taking attractive still life photos of food

Black and White- Photos that have no colour

Close up- Taking a photo close up really showing features of a person or thing

Panorama- wide angle view

Action shots- picture taken with a person or thing when in motion of doing something

I am very excited to start digging into my camera and photographs at another level with exploring new settings, techniques and angles. I look forward to learning new things because there is so much to learn in regards to the new technology and all of the new apps out there for photo editing.

Keep posted for new photographs and tweets about how my photography learning journey is going!
